The Information Value Chain is a concept developed by Sebastian Schwolow and Mikkel Jungfalk Andersen, M.Sc. graduates in Information Management

of Copenhagen Business School. Originally part of our Bachelor’s project, the Information Value Chain is an idea that has grown out of our collaboration on a number of academic papers covering subjects of information, management, organisation and communication. In our M.Sc. thesis we tested the Information Value Chain as a concept in a qualitative study.

The idea is simple:
Information is everywhere. It pervades our societies, drives our  businesses and defines the age we live in. It is a valuable resource; and like all valuable resources, it is scarce. Or is it?

Mind you, information as such is abundant. “Oceans of information” exist on billions of harddrives and other storage devices. These oceans are stirred up by new technologies designed to filter the relevant from the irrelevant, the reliable from the unreliable. And yet, even the amount of filtered information fed to us is probably more than we can chew – and certainly more than we can truly use.

Valuable information then is scarce and digging it up costs nerves and time and money. On the other hand, a proactive attitude to information management can reduce these costs and result in a true competitive advantage over those who are “still searching”.
Producing, maintaining and nurturing valuable information requires a structured approach to the information value chain.
